Personalities

Johnny and June are 13 year old gray Percherons who have been trained to pull horse drawn vehicles. Percherons naturally possess mild temperament and have been used to pull for centuries. Johnny and June are comfortable with road traffic, noises, and other animals encountered in public, making them especially adept for their role at Walla Walla Coach Company.

Johnny is curious and affectionate, while June is “all business” when it comes to pulling her passengers. Both enjoy human attention and they both love a good scrub and massage when work is over!

Nutrition and Hydration

Like humans, horses need to be well nourished and hydrated when exercising. They primarily eat high-quality grass and alfalfa. But to ensure they receive the needed calories, they are fed grain daily which is supplemented with electrolytes to ensure they drink adequate water and stay healthy during summer heat.

Washing

Johnny and June love rolling around in the dirt. Before they go to work, they each receive a 30-45 min bath. This is not just for appearance, but it also ensures any gritty dirt is gone so all the harness parts fit comfortably.

Work Day

We ensure none of our horses are overworked by establishing temperature limits for operation, limited workday hours and keeping water onboard at all times so they can be offered water regularly.

Farrier Services

Regular professional farrier services ensure Johnny and June’s hooves remain in healthy condition with shoes replaced or serviced regularly. We add Borium to our team’s shoes, which is a tungsten-carbide material that adds traction similar to a cleat. On smooth surfaces, this reduces risk of slipping and prevents injury to the team.
